We got out at dardenelle this morning and caught a few stripers, white bass and a couple skipjack. As we were heading to the ramp i noticed a warden sitting at the ramp. Everything was kosher, or so we thought, so we pulled on up. Showed them our lifejackets, they ask for a throwable pfd. Apparently i've been running illegal for most of my life as it was the first time it has ever been mentioned. Next came proof of insurance, after tearing the boat, tackle box, everything on me and even the truck, i broke down and called Mrs. Walls at state farm, the warden took my word tho next time i needed proof. Just beginning to drive off, he mentioned that the letters on my boat are too small as they should be at least 3 inches (mine are stenciled flat black at 2 inches. Luckily all ended well with a warning ticket and hopefully i'm off on the right foot with weather perking up. Things could of been a whole lot worse... :thumb:

Once during a routine stop I was told that my fancy-script, color-matching letters were not allowed, as they were supposed to be 3 inch BLOCK letters. That was really nice since I had spent weeks looking at other boats trying to decide what style of letter I wanted (obviously there were LOTS of other boats with fancy script letters running around) and they had cost me about $30 per side from the sign shop.

Everything else checked out and I left with a warning and a yes sir. That was about 6 yrs ago and I never have got around to ripping those letters off.

Most wardens are just doing their job. But some will make small exceptions. We have a few that can be complete :censored: holes. Best read your book and follow the regs to avoid trouble.:thumb:

how's that causing trouble? Do you think busting drunk drivers is a bad thing? Just pointing out an off the wall comment. Didn't know you had anything to do with it.

What is the rule on Throwable PFD? Under 20 feet it was not needed, is what I thought. Guess I better check the reg book again.

I just upgraded from a 16 foot aluminum boat to a 17 foot fiberglass model. I am sure there are several changes in the reg book I need to take note of.

Fire extinguisher?
Life Jackets?
Kill Switch?
Nav Lights?

Anything else?

This link should provide the info you need. Boats over 16' are required to have a throwable PFD on board.

Looks like I need to add a fire extinguisher and a throwable pfd to the list of must gets before the boat hits the water.

Thanks for the link, I have not been the the Game and Fish site since the made the improvements. NICE!!!!

Don't forget your horn or whistle either

I lost an argument over the rule about boat registration requirement, "engine-powered or sail". I thought engine implied a combustion engine, no, a trolling motor is deemed an "engine" on my 12' flatbottom. Stupid rule cost me a days pay.

He was nice enough to give me a pamplet telling me what all was needed. :thumb:

The fire extinguisher, life jackets etc. i already knew about. With five lifejackets in the boat i always thought one could of been counted as a throwable. With everything loaded in the boat i'm just wondering where i'm going to put it....

odocoi, seems the previous post, #8, was about drinking coke. you turned it into drunk driving. it only specified in #9, that they were drinking, not what they were drinking. just pointing out an off the wall comment. BG12

Yep. Had to register my 16' old town canoe. People sure are confused and give me funny looks when they see letters on the side...but it's all worth it on a 3 day trip down the buffalo when they are paddling against a head wind and I'm trolling along.:thumb:

would you please read the post I quoted. I guess he could have been referring to all the cars that get stopped for driving while drinking coke. I wonder if he could have been talking about beer?

I was told during a "Coast Guard" saftey inspection one holiday weekend that the letters are also supposed to contrast against the color of the boat so they are clearly visible. I didn't know (but mine did).

That is why mine are illegal. My boat is camo and i stenciled them on in flat black (Like on some federal wardens boats i've seen). Ya know tho that is the first time i've had anyone say anything about them and we are on the water all the time. I even mentioned they looked so good on some federal boats i thought they'd look good on mine.
