Anyone into collecting old lures? I have some books that deal with old lures and their prices. I've also seen neat displays with them, for example stuck on weathered pieces of driftwood.

One lure I've looked for but have not been able to find is one I used years ago-- a lure that looked like a small eel--it was olive-colored and plastic and had a treble hook on one end--worked really well in some of our farm ponds with Largemouths. I know they make eels that are kind of like plastic worms but this was a hard plastic and I've never been able to find anything that quite matches it since I used it years ago--I no longer have the lure.

And then there's a wooden topwater called the Spin Lil' with a semi-open mouth and spinner on the tail end--it was murderous on Smallmouths many years ago when we used to float the Ouachita River toward Mena where it begins. Haven't seen anything like those in sometime either.

And then there's the Heddon Punkinseed--I don't think they are made anymore but I managed to hang onto one. Nothing quite like them in a farm pond--caught some good fish on them probably because they are so much like a real bream.

I used to have several of my great-grandpa's old lures, but some SOB got ahold of the box and boosted 'em. They left the box and I am grateful for that. A bud I work with has his GGF's lures cased up in a display board and he has about 150+/-. He has them insured and they are super cool!!! I don't now what all he has, but he has researched nearly all of them and they're all about 50+ yrs old. Some were hand made by a guy out of Stuttgart (don;t know his name though) and these are the ones that I liked the most.
What I'd like to know are the memories that these lures made for the "original" owner.... like guns... I bet they all have a story!

That's a cool one John:biggrin: I have quit a few that I have accumulated over the years. I used to have an eel that sounds exactly like what you described it was my dad's and I think my older brother lost it in a farm pond. I also have several old reels and rods. I have my grandpa's old bamboo bait caster with an old Garcia 5000 on it. My grandpa taught me to fish and he passed away a few months ago. The rod and reel is one of my most prized possesions. I also have a Jitterbug with a plastic lip, I did some research and found that during WWII there was a shortage of aluminum so they used plastic. I thought that was pretty cool.

My wife's dad has a ton of old lures. He collects them and usually buys at least 2 or 3 new ones a week. Crazy thing is, he doesn't even fish to begin with.

Looks like a Jitterbug--those will wake em' up for sure. I used to know people who fished at night liked to use those. Speaking of racketmakers I fished some with a Heddon Flaptail--a little unusual because it had a piece of metal off its tail end that would slap the water and make a sound when you jerked it across the top of the water. Only lure that used that device that I know of.

That red and white one looks like a Bass-Oreno, smaller version, I've seen them with 3 trebles before. In the second picture the deep diving bait looks like an older Bomber or Mudbug to me but I'm not sure and the round fat lure I've seen before but can't think of it--kind of looks like a little Devilshorse but the diving lip is throwing me off--I think Pflueger may have made that one. I don't have my i.d. book handy either.

You were close......dipsy diver(or dipsy doodle...one or t'other)....made right here in Ar. I'm trying to think the factory was in Eldorado....my wife is slightly kin to Cotton Cordells family. The original red and white DD is over at my P.I.L.'s in it's original box. I made the one I have...it's wood, and the only difference is I changed the eye colors to just the opposite!:thumb:

I found the mud bug in a slough...all the paint and hooks was gone...I hand painted it to look like a crawfish, was gonna fish with it too, but my kids are bloody hail on me when I try to use one of my "artworks" for something as trivial as fishing! Hahaha! I now have quite a mess of lures...in a glass case on my wall. They all like to point out that when ole john passes this life...they will get the whole enchilada! Hahaha!

Now that you said it I recognize it now. I think one of the rarest lures is a cherry bobber or something like that as I recall. I guess almost anything will catch a fish or maybe they didn't and that is why you don't see them anymore.

Here are a couple I had handy.

I hadn't seen another Razorbug in a long time. I got mine from my dad back in the early 70's.

I messed around a few years ago, and found a small C.C. factory operating in Ar. I got all the little doodads and screws and stuff I needed to make a bunch! Ther's one certain Bass Fisherman whom will remain anonymous....but I met him at a yardsale that had advertised fishing lures. He showed me a "popper-doodle"....and asked if I knew where he might find some of them[discontinued lures]. I told him yeah, and made him about 20 or so, and man was he tickled....anyway......I thought I'd never see another razorback like mine...cool!~john

I talked to my Dad the other night ..... one of his old friends died, huge rod/reel/lure collecton left behind and Bass pro sent a rep down, offered $8,000 for it

I collected Storm lures for a while. Of the maybe 145 different color, I had about 130 of them. I know a lot about them, bought, sold and traded thousands of them.

Yeah Storm made or still make the Hot N' Tot--a crankbait I used a lot.
