Has anyone here ever fished there. I fished there for the first time weekend before last. I only caught one fish but it was a nice fat 4 pound Florida strain bass. I hooked another that got around a stump and broke off after hitting a buzzbait abot 3 feet from the boat. I got a look at him and he was a bigggg fish. I will certainly be going back. I just wish there was a campground. When the fish down there start chasing shad, that is a sight to see. :thumb: :thumb:

I fished there a lot when I was in college in Monticello. The fishing can be tough the 1st few times you go, but once you find a few spots you are good to go. You might not catch a lot of fish, but they will all be healthy and strong. If you can fish during the week, that is the time to go....If it is a nice weekend, it is hard to find a spot to get your bait wet!!

I've seen & heard of several 10+ pound bass coming out of that Lake. Used to hear fairly often of 6+ pound bass being caught there. Ask Arkie_3 Fan, I think he'll know what's happening there these days.

A friend of mine caught a 10 pounder there several weeks ago.

I saw a guy in the boat across from my buddy and me catch a fish last year that fought for a big while....I think he tried to get him into the boat too soon and the bass jumped straight up at the side of their boat, and spit his lure right out.....I swear that fish had to weigh at least 10 maybe more. It was overcast that day, and we were just killing time and I slaughtered them on a chartreuse strike king willow leaf spinner.~John......Don't horse them, in Lake Monticello...take your time!

I had one fish chase my zara spook and I didn't know until I lifted the lure out of the water. He jumped about a foot out of the water trying to get it. When those bass start chasing shad, it is like watching jaws going after a swimmer.

there is a campground on the plantersville road entrance of the lake. its called J&S Campground. I talked them into letting me setup my camper for a few months while attending college until i found somewhere else to live. I fished the lake on a regular basis as well as tubed and wakeboarded. I personally never had much luck but I could always take you and show you exactly where the fish were and could sit and watch them, just couldnt catch them!! But I know ALOT of people who have done real well there!!!

No big bass in Monticello.

Just a rumor that the Mayor started so as to get all you folks to spend your money in his town.

Best you go somewhere else....

Listen to CP. He knows what he's talking about when it comes to Lake Monticello.
On the other hand, there is a small body of water near El Dorado that's rumored to be loaded with large bass. It's my understanding that Lake Monticello bass are transplanted to this location once they reach upwards of 8lbs. Perhaps it's a conspiracy of some sort.
If you want to go fishing on Lake Monticello right now then your best bet is to take a jig pole and some crickets or worms with you. There are some big bluegills in there and they are easier to catch than the bass.

That right there is also true....except you don't have to use perishables like worms or crickets....you can catch them on : yes jigs, small crankbaits, minispins(like beetle spins), and small plastic worms.....for big bluegills I like tight lined jigs, for redears, I like minispins!~John
