I was reading a mixture of Outdoor adventure and American history, The "John Wesley Powell" Expedition of 1869. I have seen the documentry and was reading a link about this trip that took place over 100 years ago. These guys had to depend on their hunting, fishing, primitive maps and primitive boating skills to survive, and not all made it out. Its a great story if you like history, The American West, and of course the Great outdoors. Never have been to the Grand Canyon, but Just like I said about Yellowstone, I plan to someday. Another true story, even greater than this, is the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

I have been to Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. If you get a chance you need to make the trip. It is well worth it.
What about some of the first people crossing the country back then, they get across the Mississippi river, then cross the great plains, then the Rocky Mountains only to come up right in the Middle of the Grand Canyon, that had to be a bad day, I bet they weren't thinking about what a great view.

We would most likely get tired of Hunting, fishing, hiking and just trying to survive after about a week or less. I dont know how they made it through the winters of MT,WY,SD and so on. No under armor, polortech fleece, thinsulate... We have it made today and take it for granted.

When I went on my Prairie Dog hunting adventure in Wyoming last month we went to Yellowstone since we were in that part of the country. After you get through the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming the first town you get to is "Ten Sleep, Wyoming". That's what the indians called it because it took them 10 days and NIGHTS (hense, "10 sleeps") to cross those mountains....it took us about an hour. Oh my, how times have changed!!

Those were some tough customers. And smart too. I think the life expectancy was about 40 some odd in those days even with the best of care. Probably was a lot less for members of the John Wesley Powell and Lewis and Clark endeavors. What they did is amazing to say the least.
