I find a few now and then in the Ouachitas but I find some when I'm looking for arrowheads.

I have done a little while hunting or hiking but have never gone into it seriously like paying to dig in someone's lease--but I know a number of people who have and they found it worthwhile if you are in to that kind of thing.

If you want to freelance it is very hard.
If you want to go to a working mine and do tailings the Coleman mine on the north side of Lake Ouachita is good. Type in Mt. Ida Crystals and you'll find quite a few. There are several that allow people to come in and dig or work tailings.
You will find crystals. Wear old clothes and be ready for them to turn red.

I am from Mt. Ida originally and there are lots of folks around there with leases that will let you dig for a price--of course they have the annual quartz crystal festival there each year.

We have a farm there with lots of quartz but no crystals to my knowledge--you might find a little one now and then.

I've had a number of the miners tell me that they make good money sending rocks and glass overseas as some of those places pay good money for the things.

I see a few tiny ones when I hike in the Ouachitas, while taking a break along some of the streams and lots of milky Quarts like this North Fork Ouachita River Pic shows.
