FTF !! Great location ! It had been many years since I had last been at this cave. It is actually a old mine tunnel, long abandoned. As Dillon the retired drug dog and I approached the parking place nearby, the ground had frost on it. Looking across at the cave entrance, I saw that the years had made a few changes and I thought, "12bullfrog was indeed wise to mention rubber boots." A heavy fog issued from the mouth of the cave, drifting up the mountainside above, into the timber. The approach caused me to remember the old homestead family that lived here many years ago, Lawrence. This was the "old Lawrence place". A landmark of some note for local mountaineers.
Dillon and I waded across the creek which was extremely clear and deeper than it at first seemed.
At the entrance I checked my primary light , then the back up light. I couldn't remember how far back this cave ran, but it seemed like it was a ways. And I didn't want to have my only light source fail.
Tucking my BDU leggs into the boot tops I carefully entered.
The water was cold and deep enough that I immediately sloshed some over into my boots.
A few feet back into the cave I found the old walk way boards, waterlogged and still on the bottom.
Footing became more sure after that and progress improved.
The further back I went, the less Dillon liked it. He began to "talk" to me about my foolishness.
Further away from the light of the entrance, foxfire began to glow in places.
Then I saw the first of the bats, soon I could see hundreds of bats as I moved deeper into the earth.
The beautiful brown bats were spaced a few inches apart the entire length of the cave roof, and some down on the sides even.
Moving quietly so as not to disturb the bats, I was soon at the back of the cave.
It was not as far to the back as I has remembered it.
I could still see the light at the entrance dimly.
Finding the cache after the majesty of the cave and the wildlife was anticlimatic.
Signing the log, I made my mind up to not wait so long before returning again.
Thanks 12bullfrog for this wonderful cache.

Sounds interesting. Dont know how far I might venture down into the cave, probably turn around when i started having to wade water.

You are right. The old mines in this area sometimes have a vertical shaft hidden in the water. You always walk with a walking stick to probe ahead, looking for a place where there may be no bottom.
